Privacy Policy

This privacy policy covers the Artsplainer mobile app, desktop companion app, and Adobe plugins (collectively, "the Service"), operated by Jolly Good Apps.
What the Service Does
Artsplainer analyses images of artwork using AI. You take or select a photo, choose an analysis depth, and receive a written critique. The Service runs on your phone, desktop, or as a plugin inside Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.
Data We Collect
Images you submit for analysis are sent to our server, forwarded to a third-party AI provider for processing, and then deleted from our server. We do not store your images after the analysis is complete.
Analysis text — the AI-generated critique — is returned to your device. We do not store copies of the analysis on our server.
Account data:
- Your device identifier (a random ID generated at first launch)
- Credit balance and usage history (which analysis types you used, when, and how often) — used to improve the service, not linked to your email or identity
- Pairing session data if you connect a desktop app or plugin to your phone account
Optional data:
- Artwork title (if you provide one) — sent with the image and not stored after analysis
- Email address (if you choose to link one) — used to connect you to a registered group for bonus credits and group features. You can unlink your email at any time from the app settings
- Group membership (if you belong to an organisation that uses Artsplainer)
Third-Party AI Providers
Images are sent to third-party AI services (currently OpenAI and Anthropic) for analysis. These providers:
- Process the image solely to generate the analysis
- Do not use your images to train their models (per their API terms of service)
- Do not retain the image after processing
We may change or add AI providers in the future. This policy will be updated accordingly.
Desktop Pairing
When you pair a desktop app or Adobe plugin with your phone, a session key is generated and stored on both devices. This key authenticates the desktop app to use your credit balance. You can revoke any paired session at any time from the phone app.
Local Storage
The desktop app and Adobe plugins store a session key in local storage on your computer. No images or analysis results are stored persistently. The phone app stores your device identifier and preferences locally.
Content Moderation
All images submitted for analysis are automatically screened for inappropriate content before being sent to the AI provider. This is required to protect our AI service accounts from misuse and to comply with our providers' acceptable use policies.
The automated screening may occasionally reject images that are legitimate in an artistic or documentary context (for example, historical re-enactments or wildlife photography). If your image is rejected:
- Your credits are refunded automatically
- The image is not stored or retained
- No human reviews the image — the screening is fully automated
We cannot override or bypass the content screening for individual images. If you believe the Service is consistently rejecting legitimate content for your use case, please contact us.
What We Don't Do
- We don't sell or share your data with third parties (beyond AI processing)
- We don't use third-party analytics or ad tracking in the apps
- We don't collect your name or location
- We don't require an email address — linking one is entirely optional and can be undone at any time
- We don't store your images after analysis
- We don't use cookies
Group Data
If you use Artsplainer through a group or organisation, the group administrator can see:
- Aggregated usage statistics (total analyses performed)
- Scores (if using the competition judging feature)
Group administrators cannot see your individual images or analysis text.
Data Retention
- Images: Deleted immediately after analysis (not stored)
- Device identifier and credits: Retained while your account is active
- Email address: Retained while linked; deleted immediately when you unlink it
- Usage logs: Anonymous records of analysis activity (tier, date) retained for up to 12 months
- Pairing sessions: Deleted when revoked or after 90 days of inactivity
Your Rights
You can:
- Unlink your email address at any time from the app settings
- Unpair any desktop app or plugin from the phone app settings
- Delete your account from the app (Settings > Delete Account), or request deletion if you no longer have the app
Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
If we make changes, we'll update this page and the date above.
